Silent Movie Reflection

During this Silent Movie process, I learned a lot of things. Not only about how to act on screen, but also how to put the movie together and how to add things into the movie to add character and clarity for the viewing audience.
One of the most interesting things I learned was how big your movements have to be. Since the characters don't speak, you have to make it really clear and obvious what your character is feeling and is trying to communicate to the viewers. During the beginning, my movements weren't big enough or clear enough, and the points I was trying to make were not portrayed in what I was doing. Throughout the process, I tried to find a good balance between showing emotions through movement, but also keeping it semi-realistic. This was more of a challenge than I thought because, at times, it was uncomfortable and I didn't know what to do with my body. I really had to experiment more than I thought to create my mature, yet annoyed character. This also leads into progression of emotion. Without words, the showing that my character is getting more and more frustrated was also an experiment. I really just tried to think about what I would do if my best friend was acting like a fool on my birthday in public. I thought that if I used progressively angrier and angrier facial expressions and firm hand movements that I could get that point across. I don't think I perfected it, but I do think that I got the emotions across
Another thing I learned was how slow the movements have to be. In silent movies, the audience needs more time to process what's happening and has to pay more attention, since they don't really have any context. For the audience to understand what's happening, the movements have to not only be slow, but also over exaggerated. Over exaggerated could be, as mentioned before, big/large movements that might not normally be big. It could also mean just emphasizing steps or hand motions, as well as having sharp movements. In addition, every step has to have a purpose and add some significance to the plot, because movements are the only context that the audience has. But making sure that they are slow enough for the audience to process is vital.
Over the course of planning, filming, and producing this iMovie, I learned that your movements have to be slow and exaggerated, yet purposeful, and also ways to portray emotions by experimenting and expanding my comfort zone. I improved from the beginning with having large movements, and also I think I improved with my facial expressions. Something that I could have improved upon was being even more expressive. At times, I was portraying my character but not thinking about how he/she would react if this actually happened, so some of the emotions that would naturally occur didn't really happen. Therefore, this is something I could improve upon.
Overall, I really enjoyed creating this a silent movie and found it to be a very educational experience.

Grusha, a peasant servant of the royal Natella Abashwili, finds Michael Abashwili, who is the royal heir, in the midst of the war that her fioncé is fighting in. Michael is found alone and forgotten about. She takes him and flees the dangerous area as she intends to keep him safe. Over the course of the first act, Grusha tries to avoid running into Natella and her armed forces who are rapidly looking for the child. Grusha adopts the child, and finds ways to get him food and shelter. The ...
